CONSERVATION IN ACTION - in the wild

London Zoo staff are currently involved in the development of a global strategy for the conservation of Sumatran tigers in the wild and in captivity. In 1992, they attended a captive breeding workshop in Taman Safari Zoo in Java, where wild tigers which would previously have been shot for attacking livestock or people, now form an important founder group to supply zoos with fresh genetic material.

At a further meeting in Sumatra, a database of the wild tigers living in the five reserves on the island was set up and many recommendations were made regarding improving protection, funding and staffing of the reserves.
