  • Luria's problem:

    1. societies move/develop between different patterns of social relations, specifically, from individualised to collective production

    2. cultural practices, and specifically language, develop in line with social development

    3. sociocultural development causes development in individual human cognition

  • Each of these variables is ordinally scaled: there is a definite order to the values

  • Ordinal, here refers to the level of measurement. Other levels are:

    • Nominal: no order (gender)

    • Interval: ordered and the intervals between categories is the same (date)

    • Ratio: an interval scale with an absolute zero (age).
