Sampling Strategies

  • Sampling describes the relation between the data set and the actual or notional universe of possible data

  • In analysis, we may also need to sample from a data set

  • Clarity on sampling strategies is crucial in respect of generalising

  • Need to be aware of bias (eg Labov's use of the phone directory as a sampling frame)
