Upgrading Registration from MPhil to PhD

  • Who are the upgraders?

    • Generally, they will be two members of IoE academic or research staff having relevant expertise (one is generally a member of the student's advisory panel (not a supervisor) and the other is often from another department within the relevant faculty, though this may not always be feasible).

    • They are to be identified by the supervisor, generally in consultation with the student and, where appropriate, the Director of Postgraduate Research of the relevant faculty, who must approve their appointment.

    • Upgraders should not have been involved to any great extent in the production of the thesis.

    • Upgraders are not acceptable as examiners, so it is best to be clear in advance that neither of the staff selected are possible examiners. (Note that members of the advisory panel also may not be examiners.)
