• Kress: modes of writing and image are governed by distinct logics:
  
  
  • writing (still dependent upon speech): logic of time, sequence
    
    
  • Image: logic of space, simultaneity
    
    
• But, factors such as rhyme, rhythm, stress, etc interfere with linearity of speech/writing
  
  
• And, space is often linearised (eg consider a train journey)
  
  
• Everything involves a persistent tension between time and space, between the diachronic and the synchronic
